Charity and Sid are rich and, at every turn, are offering money, influence or help of some other sort to Larry and Sally who are hungry for their help. The introduction tells us that “Crossing to Safety is a love story…in the sense that it explores private lives. Larry, a bright, hard-working graduate and budding author, has gained his first role, a nine-month slot teaching English in the University of Wisconsin. Achingly beautiful and deeply moving this is the closest any book has come to bring a tear to my eye, the friendship between the Langs and the Morgans was so strong and heart warming it has profoundly affected the way I look at life and that of my loved ones.

Wallace Stegner, who offers this scene near the end of his 1987 novel Crossing to Safety, has Larry, his narrator, address Hallie.Despite some dark passages, it’s a delight to read and I’m adding it as one of my all-time favorites. Crossing to Safety ultimately lingers with you awhile as a mournful and melancholy tribute to the passage of time. Red faces, tingling skin, exuberant vitality, laughter, and for Sally and me the uncustomary pleasure of giving instead of taking.

This defines the term character-driven novel, multi-faceted and deeply defined Steigner hones each with a surgeon’s precision. Sometimes it got a little wordy, and some references were obscure for me, but overall, these weren't too obstructive for my reading pleasure. Oh, and the women in this book are given equal billing to the men, which is always a good thing in my view. Seen in geological perspective, we are fossils in the making, to be buried and eventually exposed again for the puzzlement of creatures of later eras.Lots of things have to align for that to happen, besides proximity, compatibility between four people, and the kids, a similar socio-economic standing, political and intellectual similarities. After all, he’s a famous novelist, and, for 35 years, Larry and his wife Sally have been close friends of the couple. Then, in a matter of pages, those children are all grown and engaging in long paragraphs of expository dialogue.

Yet, despite the beauty of such places, we can’t deny the fact that what is given can also be taken away. There is no great melodrama here – no infidelities, no acts of malicious violence, no hatred or vengeance. I can see that place in Vermont right now if I close my eyes and shut out the murmur of the television in the other room, the sound of a snowblower across the street. There is scene after scene of picnics, parties, and skating with our two main couples, but no children. She has great ambitions for him, but, although he looks like a Greek god, he’s a dreamy kind of a fellow, rich enough not to have to work hard. We meet two couples, Larry and Sally Morgan and Sid and Charity Lang, life-long loyal friends, soul mates, occasional competitors and mutual supporters. If this had happened in recent years, I would be compelled toward images of Clark What's-His-Name throwing off his glasses and business suit and emerging in his cape as Superman.
