To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. There have been some more substantial revisions to some of the keys, presumably improvements resulting from a review or from feedback that the authors have received. Comparison pages show different leaf shapes and flower clusters to enable quick and easy navigation to the right section of the book to make your identification. This book isn't just a 'look up the pictures to find your plant' book, it has a key-system that actually performs very well indeed when compared to other serious ID books - very pleasantly surprised by this book, it's beautiful and a powerful ID tool! Leading botanical artists have been specially commissioned to ensure accurate, detailed illustrations.

This is an indispensable guide for all those with an interest in the countryside, whether amateur or expert, and is beautifully packaged to lend itself both as gift or self-purchase. The training involves three weekly online modules, with a large interactive component and complemented by supported self-study exercises.I have found the book straightforward to use and it is a good introduction to identification keys for those who have just started looking more closely at some of the plants they come across when they are out in the countryside.

Spreads are indicated by surrounding icons representing items on the same (double page) spread in a grey box. It covers Britain and Ireland and contains a combination of illustrations and identification keys: those interested in wild plants may have previously seen this combination in the Francis Rose guide.

I could not find any information in the introduction about the changes made from the original version, but the illustrations appear to be unchanged, and most of the species accounts seem to be the same or have only minor changes. The illustrations I thought at first were quite small then with a closer look I saw how accurate they are - the depictions in most cases make it possible to recognise the whole plant and only need a closer inspection where plants are very similar. This is quite a thick heavy book so we usually leave this one at home for reference use rather than for field use. Libro usato, si vede che il libro e' un "troppo pieno" di qualche biblioteca pubblica, ma è davvero in buono stato in quanto poco consultato, e oltretutto ad un prezzo conveniente. And thats just the illustrations - each section has a 'proper' key to wade through for those with detailed botanical knowledge.

Detailed information on which places to visit in Britain particularly rich in flower species are also included, along with individual maps showing where each species can be found. Following on from the successful first edition of the Collins Flower Guide, this second edition has been renamed to reflect the fact that it covers wild and not cultivated plants.

Where the names differ from those in the first edition they are added in parentheses following the new name for reference. Species are described and illustrated on the same page, with up-to-date authoritative text aiding identification. Even at its huge depth and quite a weight I will consider carrying it into the field on appropriate 'flower based days'.

This is an updated version of a book which was first published in 2009 as the 'Collins Flower Guide', which has been renamed presumably to make it clear that it is a guide to wild flowers rather than those grown in gardens! While perhaps not suitable for everyone, this book is essential for any taxonomic degree, and would be great for anyone with the desire and patience to learn how to use taxonomic keys.Collins Wild Flower Guide is an indispensable guide for all those with an interest in the countryside, whether amateur or expert. There are no new illustrations as such, but substantial text corrections and updates in addition to the taxonomic changes. Birds continue to arrive in the UK from more northerly regions to spend the next few months here in our warmer winters, before. I have never seen such a comprehensive coverage of the natural fauna , to be found around the British Isles .
