Description

If this sounds appealing to you but you’re really looking for a home camera, there are options. The Reolink Go PT Plus is similar in most respects, right down to the form factor. However, it has a plain white housing, which is more suitable for residential use. To return to the point „human“, I am convinced that the camera can be used incredibly well, due to its camouflage thus for monitoring the property. It would also be nice to have such an attachment strap for the solar panel in addition to the one that comes with the camera. Note: all photos and videos taken with the Keen are based on the software version as the camera was shipped. During my test, the software was improved several times (including night vision). This results in detailed and razor-sharp images at close range. Still images are recorded in analog with the same quality (4 MP, 2560 x 1440 pixels). In my opinion, the Reolink Keen has a clear advantage over other 2K cameras in terms of image quality.

You’ll also have to install the Reolink app on your smartphone. Pair your phone with the camera, and you’ll be able to access all the monitoring and control features. The next feature is the invisible IR-LEDs, which neither humans nor much of the wildlife can detect. I was thus able to see animals moving around my property undetected. This has presented me with fascinating videos and impressions of foxes, martens, hedgehogs and squirrels. Without this camera, I would have been unaware of what was happening on my property at night. However, trail cams can also be used for simple observation. If you think there might be bears in your woods, how cool would it be to get a picture? Before the release, I was provided with the new Reolink Keen camera for extensive testing over several weeks. A good quality trail camera has any number of applications. Most people use them for hunting. You can set them up on game trails, and get a sense for how and where the animals are moving.

Camera Design

All the Reolink battery-powered cameras detect motions based on the PIR motion sensor. The PIR sensor (passive infrared sensor) detects changes in the amount of infrared radiation impinging upon it, which varies depending on the temperature and surface characteristics of the objects in front of the sensor. Therefore, the installation of your camera matters a lot. The camera is camouflaged to minimise detection and it comes supplied with a strap so you can easily set it up on a tree or post at the desired spot. The camera body is also IP64 rated, meaning it is fully weatherproof. Another feature is supposed to be GPS. However, this feature was not yet implemented in the software due to my early version. But for most people, they simply weren’t practical. They needed to be hardwired, and you needed a dedicated TV and VCR for monitoring and recording. Most importantly, you couldn’t monitor them remotely. At best, you’d come home to a grainy video of your house getting robbed. Based on its advanced 4G camera technology, Reolink launched the dedicated trail camera brand KEEN and its first game camera KEEN Ranger PT. Compared to traditional trail cameras, the KEEN one can pan and tilt with a 360°view. Users can control the camera to rotate horizontally and vertically via the phone app from afar. With the rotation feature, farmers, campers, hunters, or wildlife organizations can get a full picture of what is happening.

For example, when a person moves straight toward the camera (shown below), the PIR motion sensor will be less sensitive to the movement. One of the most interesting aspects of the KEEN Ranger PT is the ability to livestream. This is an often requested feature with wildlife cameras, giving you an immediate view of what is happening in front of your camera 24/7. Providing you have an internet connection, you can access a live stream in seconds (and even pan / tilt the camera view). In principle a very good idea. When the camera is installed deep in forests for wildlife viewing, the GPS coordinates are absolutely very useful and the camera can be found again later. It should be noted that not all networks are supported by the camera. In Germany, only the „D- network“ (Vodafone and Telekom) comes into question. It features a 4MP 1/3" CMOS Sensor which allows the camera to capture high definition videos at 2K resolution ( 2560 x 1440). The resolution of the livefeed does vary depending on the quality of the connection - a stronger signal means better quality. It is worth knowing that the Reolink Keen cannot be operated in the WLAN, but only in the mobile network. Thus, it needs its own SIM card.
